Disneyland Railroad Frontierland Depot

In July 2020, the long absence of the Disneyland Railroad finally came to an end. As Disneyland Paris reopened after the coronavirus closure, the steam train once again circled Disneyland Park. Looopings described it as a small miracle: after more than twenty months, guests could board again, even though the reopening had been postponed many times.

For Frontierland Depot, this meant the station returned to its normal role in the park route. The railroad had four stations in four themed lands, including Frontierland Depot, and carried guests past highlights such as the Grand Canyon diorama, the geysers near Big Thunder Mountain and scenes from Pirates of the Caribbean. Historically, the reopening matters because the closure began with work around the Frontierland Theater but grew into one of the most striking long outages of a classic Disney attraction in Paris. The return restored both function and atmosphere to the western station.

In January 2020, there was finally movement in the long-running Railroad story. Looopings reported that the steam trains would run again after 434 days. Guests could not ride yet: these were operational test runs between 13 and 28 January, meant to train staff and test the attraction again.

For Frontierland Depot, this was an important interim moment. Construction of the theatre in Frontierland had previously required part of the track to be removed and had caused prolonged work around the station. Seeing trains move again meant the railway was technically heading back towards operational readiness, even if the public reopening remained unclear. For fans, it felt like the first real sign of recovery after a frustratingly long silence. The ride had not yet returned to the guest day, but the steam train was literally moving again.

By November 2019, the Disneyland Railroad had been standing still for more than a year. Looopings questioned why the train was still not running, even though the new Frontierland Theater had already opened and was empty again after its Lion King show. Disney explained that work was still continuing in Cottonwood Creek Ranch, the area where Frontierland Depot and the theatre are located.

The explanation made the impact on the station concrete. Part of the track had previously been removed for construction traffic and had to be relaid. Safety barriers were also being installed at the railroad crossing. For visitors, the main result was continuing uncertainty: there was still no reopening date, although the train had originally been expected back in March 2019. For fans, Frontierland Depot became a symbol of projects running late at Disneyland Paris. The depot was not merely next to a construction site; it was directly tied to the technical reshaping of the whole area.
