In April 2025, one of Kleuterhof’s renewed play elements disappeared again. Looopings reported that Efteling had removed a small game that still showed an old image from Carnaval Festival. The element was a heart-shaped box with a transparent front and red balls, allowing visitors to move the balls into the right spots in the picture.

The issue came from a detail that had survived the 2024 renovation. In Carnaval Festival itself, Efteling had already changed the way Africa was depicted after criticism about stereotyping. The Kleuterhof game, however, still contained an older version of that scene. According to Looopings, Efteling had apparently overlooked the image during the refurbishment and adjusted the element later.

For visitors, this was a small play feature. For the wider history of the attraction, it mattered more. Kleuterhof is not a narrative dark ride, but the playground still carries traces of Efteling design from the 1990s. This news showed that even a children’s play corner can become part of a current discussion about visual language, sensitivities and the careful updating of park heritage.

In March 2025, Kleuterhof found an unexpected defender. Looopings covered an interview with Efteling designer Robert-Jaap Jansen, who argued that criticism of attractions such as Max & Moritz, Nest and Kleuterhof was unfair. In his view, Efteling should be able to be more than the classic Anton Pieck style, especially in areas made specifically for young children.

When asked which element in the park was underrated, Jansen named Kleuterhof. The playground behind Vogel Rok was designed by Henny Knoet in 1994 and is known for its bright colours, cartoon-like play equipment and a style that many fans feel clashes with the rest of the park. Jansen saw it differently. He pointed to children enjoying themselves there and mentioned details such as the piano and the playful jokes built into the equipment.

For visitors, the interview did not change the playground itself, but it mattered for Kleuterhof’s place in Efteling history. The attraction was not presented as an outdated problem, but as a deliberately created world for children. That sharpened the long-running debate about taste, audience and Efteling identity.

In November 2024, Kleuterhof was back in the spotlight because of a smaller but eye-catching incident. Looopings reported that a colourful clown seesaw in the playground next to Vogel Rok had come loose from the ground and fallen over. Photos showed Efteling employees around the play element, with temporary barriers being placed.

This was not just any piece of equipment. The seesaw, shaped like a smiling clown face with a hat, has been part of the park since 1994 and belongs to Kleuterhof’s distinctive playful design language. The timing made the incident more striking: the playground had undergone major maintenance earlier that same year, during which nearly all play elements, including the seesaws, were dismantled and refurbished.

For visitors, the practical impact was limited, but the incident showed how vulnerable an older playground can remain even after visible maintenance. For fans, it fitted into a broader story. Kleuterhof is a nostalgic yet debated corner of Efteling, where every repair, fence or damaged element feeds the discussion about how long this play area can realistically continue.
