Oblivion

Oblivion played a striking role in an illegal night-time stunt by YouTubers in early 2023. A group of anonymous video makers broke into Alton Towers while the park was closed to the public. A video lasting more than 22 minutes appeared on the Out Of Society channel, showing the group moving through the resort.

According to Looopings, this was not a careful exploration. The intruders made a lot of noise, flew a drone several times and threw objects around. They visited areas including Halloween mazes, the station of Wicker Man, CBeebies Land and The Smiler. In the final section of the video they stood on top of Oblivion, the 20-metre-high dive coaster, where they danced and sang along to well-known songs.

For regular guests there was no immediate impact, because the park was closed. For fans and park observers, the incident was a clear example of how recognisable thrill rides can become targets for online stunt behaviour. Oblivion's exposed structure, tunnel and iconic drop make it visually powerful, but the story mainly underlined how dangerous and damaging such break-ins can be for safety, security and the park's reputation.

Alton Towers clearly positioned Oblivion as one of the resort's six major coasters in 2017. With the Big Six Challenge, the park encouraged guests to use the official app to check off rides on The Smiler, TH13TEEN, Rita, Oblivion, Nemesis and Galactica. Anyone who completed the full list received a free weekday return ticket for September.

The campaign was more than a simple discount offer. Alton Towers used the challenge to present its main coaster line-up as a single thrill collection. Oblivion stood alongside the later record-breaking The Smiler and established classics such as Nemesis. That says a lot about the dive coaster's lasting status, almost twenty years after its opening.

For guests, the challenge created a clear route through the park's most intense attractions. For fans, it acted as an official signal of which coasters Alton Towers considered its headline rides. Oblivion remained important because of its simple but iconic formula: the pause on the edge, the warning not to look down and the plunge into the tunnel. The promotion confirmed that the ride's one big moment still carried serious marketing power.

Oblivion became indirectly involved in the aftermath of the serious accident on The Smiler in 2015. When Alton Towers reopened after the crash, The Smiler itself remained out of service. But the neighbouring attractions Enterprise and the dive coaster Oblivion also stayed closed for the time being because the investigation into the cause of the accident was still ongoing.

The news focused primarily on the severe consequences for one of The Smiler's victims, yet for Oblivion the situation meant becoming part of a wider safety response in X-Sector. Alton Towers did not want to take risks while investigators were still determining what had gone wrong. Sonic Spinball was also closed, and sister parks Thorpe Park and Chessington had rides standing idle for additional safety checks.

For guests, the impact was clear: even after the park reopened, one of its most recognisable thrill rides was unavailable. For fans, this period shows how closely Oblivion is tied to the wider X-Sector setting. The coaster had not been involved in the crash, but its position next to The Smiler meant that the aftermath of one of the park's most serious incidents also affected Oblivion.
