Les Mystères du Nautilus

The reopening of Les Mystères du Nautilus brought curious visitors, but also strong criticism. Two days after reporting on the updated walkthrough, Looopings covered the fan response sparked by the Dutch-language Disney podcast D-Tales. The main point of frustration was the Grand Salon scene. Where a physical squid animatronic once provided the finale, visitors now see a screen with sharks, dolphins, turtles and whales. To the podcasters, that did not feel like an upgrade, but like a loss of what made the Nautilus special. The debate shows why small walkthrough attractions can matter deeply to fans. Les Mystères du Nautilus is not about capacity or speed; it is about atmosphere, set design and the illusion of stepping inside Nemo's submarine. By replacing a moving physical effect with projection, Disney touched that core feeling. For regular visitors, the attraction was cleaner and accessible again after a long closure, but the fan reaction gave the refurbishment a second chapter: whether modernisation can come at the cost of character.

After being closed for almost two years, Les Mystères du Nautilus returned to Discoveryland in July 2023. Disneyland Paris had not only refreshed the walkthrough with new sets, lighting and music, but also changed its content. The old finale, in which a giant squid attacked Captain Nemo's submarine, disappeared during the refurbishment. In the Grand Salon scene, visitors now see calm underwater imagery with animated sharks, dolphins, turtles and whales. Disney linked the update to a new focus on the wonders of the oceans and conservation, even drawing on knowledge from animal care specialists at Epcot. For visitors, the reopening brought back a quiet Discoveryland classic, but with a different tone: less Jules Verne adventure and danger, more educational marine life. Historically, that made the change significant. The 1994 attraction, a walkable Nautilus between Hyperspace Mountain and Autopia, had long been valued for its physical set design and theatrical finale. That is why the renovation immediately became more than routine maintenance for fans.
