The Gardens

The Gardens are Alton Towers' historic gardens, with footpaths, water features and 19th-century structures.

The Gardens reveal the older side of Alton Towers, from before the estate became known mainly as a theme park. Along the paths, terraces, fountains and long sightlines, you walk through a 19th-century landscape laid out as a grand pleasure ground, now offering a calm counterbalance to the surrounding ride areas.

Notes

Alton Towers' official page describes The Gardens as a walking and relaxation area within The Towers, with no height restrictions. Historic England lists Alton Towers as a Grade I Registered Park and Garden and dates the first major development phase to around 1814-1827 under the 15th Earl of Shrewsbury, with Robert Abraham and Thomas Allason as the professional designers; John Claudius Loudon was consulted. That is why the design credits remain with Abraham and Allason, while the historical context is preserved in these notes.

Theming

Rather than a modern themed area, the gardens are a historic landscape of terraces, water features, sightlines, follies and early 19th-century architectural elements.
